Whoa, this is getting more and more hairy.
If this is anywhere near a relation to superstrings, it's sure a part that's far away from black holes ;P

The hair could be superstrings trying to overcome the gravity, does superstrings have mass?
At least they are multidimensional and might be able to ignore gravity completely, like sticking your head out of the window of the car, letting the hair flow in the wind. Sorry... a bit tired... :)

humm, not a very physical metaphor there :P

AFAIK, but I'm not that great on that topic, there are different kinds of superstrings. They basically are a different interpretation of the usual particles you see in physics. Some of them are dependend on gravity, others aren't.

However, don't forget: Light doesn't have mass and yet it IS affected by gravity. Gravity bends light.
The special thing about black holes is, that gravity becomes so strong that not even an accelleration that allows for traveling at the speed of light (essentially infinite accelleration) is enough to surpass the gravity's pulling force.

Hmmm, photons have zero resting mass? But what about when they move=has energy...
But of course, it is called the event horizon for a reason, if I remember correctly no information can get out of there, but also recollect Hawking having some theory about pairs of particles where one of them gets sucked in and one escapes but still shares information, not sure about this though, don't remember which book I read it in.

Anyway, this could be a parallel universe, where the black holes are much more social, a bit unshaved and chit chat all day long... :keiross:
...it is just a matter of parameters = natural constants...

Well, things that move and have energy, ALWAYS have to have mass, except they somehow violate the most famous formula in this world...

That either means that even gravitons would be affected by the force they are the generators of or that they don't have any energy or that they never EVER move but it's the space that moves around them (hyperdrive, anyone?)

It's already known that, just like quantum mechanics predicts, no information is ever lost. What ever falls into a black holes slowly emerges from it again as it dissolves. However, the information isn't comming out as it's going in. It's essentially impossible to reconstruct all that without exactly knowing all the interactions inside the black hole. Also, as the gravity in such an object merges things to a Newtonianly infinitely small point (just an approximation but it should bring across the point), everything in there probably is entangled in space-time, which means that any meassurement of what comes out of a black hole changes what ever is inside the black hole, further complicating the process of knowing what went it.
Btw, that entanglement theory is purely by me and could easily be wrong^^
However, information infact DOES come out of the black hole again.
It basically means that the Hawking radiation is not uniform but rather has a wave- or impulse feature...

Heh, as black holes aren't fully explained yet, I guess it's not perfectly known either, how those constants affect a black hole's behaviour.

It sure could be an imaginative world, no matter of being a parallel one^^

OK, I was referring to your statement: "don't forget: Light doesn't have mass and yet it IS affected by gravity." ...and most photons do move, so it is not so strange that black holes bend light... I do not think black holes attract massless objects?

About the information in black holes, I once read one theory that you could get info of everything inside the black hole from the surface of the event horizon, that it acted like some hologram hard drive.
I guess the black hole theories will be a lot of guessing, but I have always loved to read about those theories, it tickles my imagination, even knowing that most of it isn't pure facts.

Lets call it a imaginative world. :)

The holographic thing works like this:
As the speed of light is a natural constant, if the (microscopical) velocity of light changes, that means that something must have happened either with space or with time to allow that. Space or time has to be expanded or compressed to allow seemingly different velocities, including ones exceeding the speed of light. (In fact, some galaxies apparently move away from each other faster than at the speed of light. The only way that's possible is by space expanding between them. It's somewhat like zooming versus actually travelling. Zooming at a gap between two points makes them seemingly go away from each other. Alternatively it's like blowing into a balloon with points drawn on it. Without any direct motion of the points, they gain distance. Those kinds of indirect velocity are not affected by the limits of speed of light, apparently.)
Inside relativity theory, space and time are described as a unified concept, based on mass-distribution inside an else flat, e.g. euclidean space. So BOTH are stretched or compressed simulatneously.
At the point where the velocity of light apparently reaches zero, things act like if space and time totally stops.
This point is a (Newtonianly) accurate, omnidirectionally constant distance from a given center of mass: The Schwarzschild radius.
This on one hand IS a surface, e.g. 2D, on the other hand whole 3D-objects pass beyond that point, making it host of a holographic representation of what ever fell in.

The Hawking-radiation, on the other hand, is actually emitted by a black hole somwhere in infrared. What ever fell in, causes some kinds of IR-flashes which, if you knew the exact things that happen(ed) inside that black hole, would give you the whole information of the things that went in (Newtonianly yet again. Quatum Physics of course doesn't allow for full knowledge of every detail. - That's a point I didn't get yet: Quantum Physics occludes information partially but at the other hand it guarantees that no information is ever fully lost...)

Well, dead-solid objects that don't move at all don't have any Energy of course. But Quantum Mechanics doesn't allow absolute knowledge of momentum, esentially causing some automated random jitter of what ever tries to stand still, causing that same thing to be affected by gravity, causing it to accelerate towards high gravities and thus being affected by black holes.
That's kinda the point of the problems with QM and Relativity... As long as QM isn't able to include gravity, black holes wont be possibly fully explained.

Note, btw, that the Schwarzschild radius is a very exactly defined radius dependend on mass. It also flickers, as it has to, due to QM restrictions on knowing exact locations. That's actually the cause of Hawking radiation.
Some self-dual particles are generated anywhere in space in pairs. Usually as soon as they are created, they already crash into each other dissolving into the energy that they "borrowed" from the surrounding system.
Near black holes with a QMly blurred boundary, sometimes, one of the two particles fall beyond the Schwarzschild radius, while the other one is just barely out of reach. It slowly but surely makes it way and gains distance of the Black Hole until it's finally emitted.
The only reason what that isn't a violation of Thermodynamics in any way is, because black holes loose energy when ever they suck in such a half of a pair of particles, esentially keeping the total System's energy constant. Due to that same thing they also shrink in size, e.g. "dissolve".

Those particles spawn anywhere in space by "borrowing" some energy of empty space and instantly give it back when they crash into each other again, which stops their existance.
When one particle falls into a black hole, the Energy still has to be kept constant. The Black Hole pays the bill.

When something else falls in, the Black hole gains Energy, Mass and Size instead.
